Medical Malpractice Insurance Costs

Medical malpractice insurance is what doctors purchase to protect themselves from potential malpractice lawsuits. The costs associated with it have grown exponentially in the last several years. This has led to a rise in insurance premiums. Of all the medical fields, this is especially true for OB/GYNs. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the median insurance premiums for OB/GYNs increased 167% over a 16-year period. This is because the risks for malpractice are greater, and cases involving infants have some of the highest claims involved. Furthermore, babies have a longer life expectancy, and hence greater potential costs over the baby's lifetime.

Fast Facts

  • According to the National Academy of Sciences, medical errors at hospitals cause 44,000-98,000 deaths every year.
