Several Liability

Several liability describes a case where two or more individuals are being held liable for something. While joint liability describes two or more individuals being held responsible to the same level, several liability describes two or more indivduals who can be held responsible at different levels. For instance, if a physician prescribes a drug that causes severe complications in a patient - and it's a known drug that causes complications - the physician and the drug maker may both be sued. A jury may find that that the physician is 90% responsible for complications while the drug maker is 10% responsible for complications. Both have to pay damages depending upon what they are ordered. For instance, if an indivdiual is awarded $10 million, the physician will be responsible for providing the victim with 90% of that.
