Unnecessary Surgery

Unnecessary surgeries occur for two distinct reasons; 1. A misdiagnosis leads to a surgery that is later found to be unnecessary, or 2. Surgery is chosen over a more conservative treatment option, either for expediency or ease. Unnecessary surgery is a serious concern, due to the risks involved in any surgery. Anesthesia and possible surgical errors can lead to serious injury or even death of a patient, so an unnecessary surgery puts patients at serious risk. If a case of medical misdiagnosis leads to an unnecessary surgery, then any resulting injury to the patient may be grounds for a medical malpractice lawsuit. In cases where a doctor prescribes surgery as a treatment over a more conservative option, there may be a case for medical negligence if injury results from the surgery.
