Question:

Can surgical malpractice cause nerve damage?

Answer:

There are various complications, which can arise as surgery malpractice. The nerve damage can result when a nerve is actually physically damaged or when medication can cause damage to the nerve. Nerve damage occurs when the nerve is unable to properly conduct impulses from the brain or spinal cord to the muscle or organ it innervates.

Nerve Damage Malpractice

Unfortunately for some people, surgical malpractice can cause nerve damage by medication or by a physical mechanism. There are some medications that are used to relieve pain that can cause nerve damage if the incorrect dose is administered. In some situations, the patient can have an adverse reaction to the anesthesia. This may result in nerve damage. The nerve impulses may be impeded from traveling down the entire length of the nerve. As a result, there can be reduced blood flow to the area the nerve innervates or the muscle may fail to contract or relax.

Another form of nerve damage malpractice occurs when the doctor or surgeon has physically cut a nerve. A laser can also be used to sever a nerve. This can happen if a surgeon is not experienced or is trying to complete the surgery in a hurry. This can be a form of malpractice if the surgery was to involve a nerve being cut, but the wrong is cut.
