Lasik Causes Thousands of Medical Malpractice Suits Each Year

Tuesday May 26, 2009

Since 1998, Lasik vision correction surgery has been wildly popular in the United States. Many thousands of patients have been relieved of their eyesight problems and are able to see with 20/20 vision- without the hassle of contacts or glasses.

However, recent studies have shown that a disproportionate amount of medical malpractice cases actually stem from the carelessness of surgeons during a Lasik procedure. In fact, the American Journal of Ophthalmology found that 28 percent of all of the procedures performed in the last 10 years had to be re-operated upon. This is an enormous expense for patients, because many insurance companies do not cover the cost of the surgery.

Those who have the procedure are warned to watch out for the following symptoms:

  • Blurry Vision
  • Double Vision
  • Scarring of the Cornea
  • Dry Eyes
  • Sensitivity to Light
  • Halo or Starburst Effects at Night
  • Loss of Vision

If one or more of these symptoms occur, you might require a second surgery, and depending upon your situation, may be able to sue your surgeon for malpractice.
