Tacoma Doctor’s License Suspended Following Patient Death

Washington State Department of Heath, Jan 02, 2008

OLYMPIA - The license of a Tacoma physician has been immediately suspended following the death of a patient while under his care.

The Medical Quality Assurance Commission and the Department of Health suspended the medical license of Andrew S. Hwang (MD00027252) following an investigation by the agency. Hwang cannot treat patients pending the outcome of a hearing.

According to the statement of charges, Hwang tried 13 psychotropic medications on the patient in the two months he treated her. Also, he did not clearly document target symptoms, clinical indications, clinical reasoning, or risk/benefit analysis for the numerous medication trials. Hwang also failed to meet the standard of care by checking his patient’s blood levels to protect her.

The statement of charges and summary order in this case are available by calling 360-236-4700 or online by clicking the link to "Provider Credential Search" on the Department of Health Web page (www.doh.wa.gov/).

The Medical Quality Assurance Commission protects and promotes public health, safety and welfare in Washington by regulating the competency and quality of doctors. Rules, policies and procedures developed by the commission promote the delivery of quality health care to state residents.
